RYA Competent Crew - Practical Course
If you have never sailed a sailboat before and would like to get started in the nautical world, take the Competent Crew course with us.
With this course you will get a general introduction to the art of sailing. You will experience life on board and get to know all the parts of a boat. You will also learn how to use the correct nautical terminology and we will teach you how to stay safe, how to prepare the boat for sea navigation and how to become an effective crew member.
Previous experience to the course: None, no experience is required.
Minimum duration: 5 full days or 2 weekends from Friday to Sunday. If you have previously done the “Start Yachting” course it will be 3 or 4 additional days.
Minimum age: Not required.
Content of the Competent Crew course: Knowledge of marine terms and parts of a boat, rigging and sails. Sailing direction and practices. Ropework. Precautions and firefighting. Personal safety equipment. Man overboard recovery. Emergency equipment. Usages and customs. General rules of the deck. Boats. Meteorology. Seasickness. General duties above and below deck. Steering the boat under power and sail. Handling lines when parking or leaving a boat in port.
Skills after the course: Being a useful member of the crew, steering a boat under power and sail, standing watch, rowing a ‘dingy’, hoisting and reefing sails and being of assistance in an emergency situation.
The course is approved by the Royal Yachting Association.

We highly recommend the online course Essential Navigation, before starting the practical course.
Being a course of only 5 students, it is amazing how much you have learned and you will have reached the minimum requirement to be able to do the next course, the Day Skipper.
This 5 day course aims to equip students with the confidence and skills to become a good crew, plus it is also a fun course where you can visit new marinas and enjoy a short vacation.

She has sailed all over the Mediterranean, as well as four Atlantic crossings, and routes in the Bay of Biscay and the Caribbean.
